Living in our fast-paced world can be challenging. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed while trying to balance your work life, home life, and social life! With this being said, it is essential to prioritize mental fitness to keep your mental health strong.
What is Mental Fitness?
Simply put, mental fitness refers to the state of your emotional and psychological well-being. You can think of it similarly to physical fitness. The more fit an athlete is, the better they perform physically. Likewise, the better your mental fitness is, the better your mind performs mentally!
An athlete can go to the gym to work on their physical fitness, so let’s explore ways to improve mental fitness! A good starting point is understanding what your mental health is composed of. We refer to this as mental health awareness. Mental health awareness refers to recognizing factors that can affect your mind. Good examples include stress, anxiety or lack of sleep. Once you can recognize factors that are affecting your mental health, you can move onto the next step of practicing self-care.
Self-Care Toolkit
Self-care can come in many shapes and forms. There’s no right way or wrong way of practicing self-care either. What works for one individual might not work for you and vice versa! With that said, it’s important to explore many different forms of self-care to see which methods work best for you.
For example, let’s say you are very stressed after a long day of work. Some individuals might find it helpful to meditate or practice yoga to relieve the stress they feel. These are great methods, however, they might not work for you! This is why it is important to try out different self-care methods to see what makes you feel your best. So while meditation and yoga might not do the trick in your case, perhaps journaling about your stressful day, or reading your favorite book will!
And don’t worry if you can’t think of a self-care method off the top of your head— Here are some self-care tools to get you started:
Talking it Out
Now what if you do all the means necessary to practice self-care, but still feel overwhelmed? You might be disheartened when this happens, but don’t be discouraged! The fact of the matter is sometimes people need more than just self-care to have better mental fitness. And there are numerous ways of doing so!
Talking through your stressors with a loved one, or a mental health professional is a great way to improve your mental fitness. Not only will it give you a means of talking through your feelings, but the listening party can offer advice and words of validation for how you feel! They may even suggest other means of self-care for you to explore too, such as improving sleep or going out for walks.
Summing it Up
Mental fitness is composed of many factors and methods that improve one’s well-being. We discussed a few of them today, but there are many more that can be explored! As mentioned earlier, mental fitness is a lot like physical fitness. It requires commitment and effort to be achieved successfully. Finding methods that resonate with you is crucial to achieving healthy mental fitness. Try to think of ways you already practice self-care and mental fitness. After reading this article, perhaps you will have a few new methods under your belt too!
