It truly is the little things…
If I have learned anything over the course of my short life, it is that there is tremendous power to be held in being grateful for the little moments, enough power to arguably change your life. The moments of stolen kisses, of finding beauty in the sunsets and sunrises, of being present in your morning walk with your dog, as he too, is just trying to enjoy all of the sights and smells around him. It is taking back the happiness of routine, and the joy of making every second count. It is the romanticism of normalcy that makes me so grateful to be alive.
It is so easy to rush through those moments, only playing a highlight reel in your head of the capital BIG moments; the vacations, the last concert you went to, always counting down the days until the weekend. But imagine what could happen if you looked at every day this way?
From the second I wake to when I lay my head to rest
I will cherish every second and give the world my best
I will sip my coffee with a smile on my face
and remember that it was not the hare but the tortoise who won the race
Slow and steady I will be
grateful for the air in my lungs and a heart full of glee
no one can take the little moments
away from me
— C.M Dillard
I find the easiest way for me to practice the habit of valuing the little things is to keep a list of three times in a day that I felt grateful or happy.
Eating dinner with my husband
Taking a walk in the sunshine
Going out for a morning coffee
When I take time out of my day to do this, I can go to bed at night remembering that every moment is so precious, and so beautiful. When we get lost spending too much time looking towards the future, we can lose out on how wonderful the present is.
That’s why I love the Quabble mind workout, Gratitude Jar. I can open the app and take a moment out of my day to jot down some things that made me truly happy, and go back and look at them when I need a reminder. It helps me to stay present, stay grounded, and helps me find positivity in my day no matter my mood! I highly recommend trying out the practice of tracking the things that make you feel grateful in your day, and see how gratitude can drastically improve your mental health for the better.
If you need a few inspirations to get started;
Did you have a yummy breakfast?
Did you hug a loved one day?
Did you get to read your new book or play a new video game?
These are all wonderful examples of things you can be grateful for in your day! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
