Navigating Pressure and Seeking Comfort 

I've always felt the weight of expectations as the firstborn daughter, especially when it comes to meeting my parents' academic standards. Juggling school responsibilities left me little time for personal fulfillment or socializing, and I often felt overwhelmed and disconnected. Seeking solace and a sense of belonging, I turned to virtual pet games like Pou and Tamagotchi. Caring for a digital pet brought me immense fulfillment and a much-needed sense of validation in my daily life.

Initiating Self-Care: My High School Journey to Mental Wellness

We all know that high school can be overwhelming and take a toll on your mental health. From balancing academics to social pressures, it's easy to feel lost in the chaos. Here are some of the coping strategies I used to thrive in those challenging years. 

  1. Beginning Therapy: After completing my first semester of senior year, I realized the importance of prioritizing my mental health. I kicked off therapy sessions, dedicating twelve hours a week for three months to self-improvement.

  2. Embracing the Process: Engaging in intensive outpatient programs taught me the value of patience and perseverance. Despite the time commitment, I saw it as an investment in my well-being.

  3. Utilizing School Resources: In addition to therapy, I took advantage of counseling sessions at school, spending an hour each week with a mental health counselor. These resources allowed me to focus on self-improvement amidst the academic hustle.

  4. Shifting Perspectives: Achieving academic success and securing acceptance into my dream school alleviated some pressure, giving me space to prioritize self-care. As part of my mindfulness practice, I started capturing moments of beauty in short videos, unintentionally fostering positivity and gratitude.

  5. Cultivating Mindfulness: Recording scenes of nature and animals helped me find joy in life's simple moments, providing solace and inspiration. Compiling these videos allowed me to reflect on moments of joy and connection, reinforcing my commitment to mental wellness.
